Why Older Cars Often Benefit More

A new car looks good already, so coating it is about keeping it that way. An older car with years of swirl marks in the clear coat has a lot of gloss to recover, and correcting then coating it produces a transformation people genuinely do not expect.

There is also a practical argument. An older car has usually been through years of washing that put the damage there in the first place. Making the surface slicker and harder means the next few years add far less.

What Has To Happen First

More preparation than a new car, and this is where most of the work and cost sits.

The One Thing That Rules It Out

Clear coat failure. When the clear coat has broken down rather than simply being scratched, it looks chalky, cloudy or in advanced cases starts peeling and flaking away in patches, often on the roof or bonnet where sun exposure is highest.

That cannot be polished back, because the layer a coating needs to bond to is no longer intact. Coating over failing clear coat does not stop it failing and does not restore it. Any detailer worth booking will tell you that rather than taking the job.

How Much Clear Coat Is Left

Correction removes clear coat, and an older car may have already had a cut and polish or two in its life. On multi stage work paint depth gets checked as the job progresses, and sometimes the right answer is a lighter correction than the paint would ideally want, because preserving what is left matters more than chasing the last few defects.

When It Is Worth It

• The car is in sound condition and you are keeping it for years.
• The paint is swirled rather than failing, which covers most well maintained cars.

• Clear coat is failing or peeling anywhere on the car.
• You are selling within a few months, where a presale detail gives you more of the benefit for less.
