Does A New Car Need Paint Correction Before Coating

Sometimes, and less than an older car would. But the assumption that a new car has flawless paint is wrong often enough that it is always worth checking before a coating goes on.

Why New Cars Arrive With Defects

A car goes through a lot between the factory and your driveway.

• Transport, sometimes across the country, often under protective film that has to be removed.
• Storage on a lot, exposed to sun, dust, sap and droppings for weeks or months.
• Dealer preparation washes, which are usually fast and rarely done with detailing standards in mind.
• Handling by multiple people during preparation and display.

Dealer washes are the most common culprit. A quick wash with whatever mitt is on hand, on a car that has been sitting outside collecting grit, is exactly how light swirl marks get put into brand new paint.

Why It Matters Before Coating

A ceramic coating is clear and it bonds to whatever is there on the day. Any swirl, hologram or mark left in the paint gets sealed underneath a hard layer designed to last years.

Removing them afterwards means removing the coating first, which is far more work than dealing with them beforehand. Coating over defects is the single most expensive mistake in this part of the trade.

How Much Correction A New Car Usually Needs

Far less than an older car, which is exactly why coating early makes sense. Correction removes clear coat, and a car with only light dealer wash marring needs a single refining stage rather than a multi stage cut.

That means you keep more of your factory clear coat, the job costs less, and what gets locked in under the coating is paint at essentially its best.

How To Check Yours

You can get a reasonable idea yourself before booking anything.

1. 01Wash and dry the car properly so you are not looking at dirt.
2. 02Look at a flat panel like the bonnet or boot in direct sun, or under a strong single light source at night.
3. 03Move your head so the reflection sweeps across the panel.
4. 04Fine circular scratches appearing in the reflection are swirl marks.
5. 05Straight parallel lines usually mean machine work has already been done badly.
