A new car has the best paint it will ever have. Every year after this one, the clear coat gets a little more marked and a little less sharp. Coating it early is an argument about holding that condition rather than recovering it later.

Why New Is The Right Time

There Is Almost Nothing To Fix

Correction removes clear coat, and there is only a finite amount of it. A car coated at a few weeks old usually needs very little correction, so you keep more of your factory clear coat and pay for less work. Wait five years and you are paying to remove damage that did not need to happen.

You Never Have The Bad Years

Most swirl marks arrive gradually through ordinary washing. Coating early means the surface is slicker from the start, so the wash mitt glides rather than dragging grit, and the car simply never accumulates the same damage.

Sun exposure, coastal air and whatever lands on a car parked outside all start working on day one. New paint is not immune to any of it, and a car parked outside from new will show it within a couple of years.

What About The Dealer Paint Protection

Dealers routinely offer a protection package at signing. Some are genuine products, many are not, and the common problems are worth knowing.

• It is often applied quickly, in a workshop bay, by whoever is available rather than a detailer.
• Preparation is usually minimal, which is the part that decides how a coating performs.
• What is actually being applied is frequently unclear, and the paperwork tends to be about the warranty rather than the product.
• Any marks already in the paint get sealed under it.

That is not an argument against protecting a new car. It is an argument for knowing who is applying it and what preparation it is getting. Ask the dealer what product it is and how long the preparation takes. The answer usually tells you what you need to know.

When It Is Not Worth It

Being straight about this is more useful than a blanket recommendation.

• If the car is on a short lease and you will hand it back in a year or two, the sums are harder to justify.
• If it lives permanently in a garage and does very few kilometres, ordinary protection may be plenty.
• If you genuinely will not wash it correctly, a coating will not save you from an automatic brush wash.
• If you are expecting it to stop stone chips, a coating is the wrong product for that job.

What It Actually Changes

Owners who coat a new car tend to describe the same things: the car stays looking new for far longer, washing takes a fraction of the effort, and bird droppings and sap stop being a small emergency every time.

There is a resale argument too. A five year old car with sharp, well kept paint presents like a much younger car, and buyers pay accordingly.
